Veterans’ Families and the Costs of the Afghan War

The lives of U.S. troops have been commodified like shipping containers in Washington’s discourse on war. If we lose a couple dozen a year, so what? The continuous deployment of our men and women in uniform to Afghanistan is made possible by the political expediency of having an all-volunteer force. “Military families are extraordinarily resilient,” says Sarah Streyder, Executive Director for Secure Families Initiative. “But their resilience is being taken for granted.”
