Briefing: U.S. Sanctions on Afghanistan’s Central Bank
A panel of human rights experts and advocates participated in a briefing call regarding the Afghanistan’s Central Bank (DAB) assets that remain frozen in New York due to an Executive Order by President Biden. Half of the $7 billion has been apportioned for the benefit of the Afghan people but has not been released; and the other half is being held in trust as a potential compensation fund for the ongoing 9/11 families lawsuit. Continuing restrictions on the Afghan Central Bank’s access to this and other assets is affecting the entire economy and further impoverishing the Afghan people.
